Not too long ya boy Amriki was trying to get you to snag a passport. This is for the opportunity to visit music fests all over or at least travel the U.S. You know…………..to learn something outside you comfort zone and build a bigger network. Well I’m going talk a lil about lodging.
Man, I get tired of cats arguing with the front desk of hotels about the things Priceline or some other 3rd party promised and the staff know nothing about it. I’m going help you figure out Online Reservation Services and different types.
Online Reservations (Priceline, Orbitz, Expedia, etc.):
Sometimes, hotels and these services make deals on rooms the hotel could not sell or a promise of rooms on fully booked days at hotel during peak time. So, a popular hotel in Miami during Christmas is promised a certain amount rooms. During busy peak times hotels don’t like selling to these services. Why sell a room for $100, when normal sold-out rate is $250. Many times hotels will walk guest to a non-soldout spot to get that maxed out dollars. Rooms in Chicago January is more than likely rooms the hotels could not sell. Have you been to the Chi in the winter?!?!! With this being said, if these service stating you are at a 5-star joint in Miami in December, with no extra charge for breakfast, and you are paying a reduced rate on a room, question it! Everyday rate is $339 and you are paying $159 a night with free breakfast. You might want to call the hotel before you get there.
Types of hotels(Wikipedia):
An upscale full service hotel facility that offers luxury amenities, full service accommodations, on-site full service restaurant(s), and the highest level of personalized and professional service. Luxury hotels are normally classified with at least a Four Diamond or Five Diamond status or a Four or Five Star rating depending on the country and local classification standards. There is no laundromat here.
Full service hotels often contain upscale full-service facilities with a large volume of full service accommodations, on-site full service restaurant(s), and a variety of on-site amenities such as swimming pools, a health club, (sometimes)children’s activities, ballrooms, on-site conference facilities, and other amenities. A lot of convention hotels fall into this category. Probably no free breakfast here.
Historic inns and boutique hotels
Boutique hotels are smaller independent hotels that often contain upscale facilities of varying size in unique or intimate settings with full service accommodations. Some historic inns and boutique hotels may be classified as luxury hotels.
Small to medium-sized hotel establishments that offer a limited amount of on-site amenities that only cater and market to a specific demographic of travelers, such as the single business traveler. Most focused or select service hotels may still offer full service accommodations but may lack leisure amenities such as an on-site restaurant or a swimming pool.
Economy and limited service
Small to medium-sized hotel establishments that offer a very limited amount of on-site amenities and often only offer basic accommodations with little to no services, these facilities normally only cater and market to a specific demographic of travelers, such as the budget-minded traveler seeking a “no frills” accommodation. Limited service hotels often lack an on-site restaurant but in return may offer a limited complimentary food and beverage amenity such as on-site continental breakfast service. No pillow-top mattress here.
Extended stay hotels are small to medium-sized hotels that offer longer term full service accommodations compared to a traditional hotel. Extended stay hotels may offer non-traditional pricing methods such as a weekly rate that cater towards travelers in need of short-term accommodations for an extended period of time. Similar to limited and select service hotels, on-site amenities are normally limited and most extended stay hotels lack an on-site restaurant. These places might be a good distance away from tourist attractions. At least the spots I’ve stayed at were.
With a little bit of knowledge, I hope you can make the right decision in choosing a hotel. Married men, don’t be cheap and reserve a extended stay spot for your anniversary. Then, become surprised with your wife’s reaction to you being cheap on the room.
